ICON or not, ushers still asked him to stop smoking pot at an REM concert in Oakland in the 80s. The Examiner (Rob somebody) thought it strange too, as if Jerry had a 007 license for that stuff.

I read in the paper that Jerry and Bobby were in the crowd at the Saturday REM show (U2 played on Friday) at the Coloseum and were asked to stop. It was an about town column in the evening paper.

LOL! Are you serious? Are you sure it was in Oakland? Don't think Jerry had a fondness for the East Bay. I think he only went there when they outgrew every place else to play.
